Synopsis

This video features a conversation between George Stoney (1916-2012), the US documentary maker and social activist, and Tony Dowmunt. George was a seminal and highly influential figure  in the development of the thinking and practice of access/participatory media in the US, UK and internationally. The conversation was recorded in George's office at the Tisch School of the Arts, New York University in August 2005, when he was 89 years old. Among the films he discusses are Getting Out  (2005) - which tells the story of some  inmates from New York’s Sing Sing Correctional Facility as well as former inmates attempting to re-establish their  lives after years of incarceration, and the importance of creativity and artistic expression both inside and outside prison walls for such individuals. He also talks about Manhattan Neighbourohood Network (the Public Access channel), and video work with patients in hospitals.
