84 Bartholomew Rd IV: Interview with two Squatters 1973
John ‘Hoppy’ Hopkins interviews two men on a floor of a squatted home of 84 Bartholomew Road in this black-and-white video.
The two white men speak about their organising tactics and how they gained support from squatting associations and locals. They occupy empty private homes by changing the locks. Although they’ve faced aggression from estate agents who hire intimidating muscle men to chase them out, they have garnered support from locals who have come around to the squatters and who have their children spend time together. They show Hoppy a leaflet which reads ‘Decent Homes for the Homeless’. They speak about their hope for future legislation for affordable housing, regulations set towards landlords and a desire for the council to support squatters.
