Opening Up
Opening Up
The early Video Group Vida (latin: "Look at This!") made over 150 video shows between 1977 and 1980. Opening Up, was made as a collaboration between Gloria George (who shot and instigated the work) and Terry Flaxton (who edited the work). Taking place in a classroom, the film examines children’s racism and their preconceived stereotypes of the world. The film features interviews with three white teachers discussing how they are attempting to educate the children about the diversity of East London and to deconstruct harmful stereotypes, while also foregrounding the importance of children ‘opening up’ about their views in order to discuss and dissect their origins. The film features a predominant interview with a 14-year-old white boy who talks about everything from his own racist preconceptions to his domestic life in the Isle of Dogs to his struggles with the education system due to his dyslexia. Some of the Black school children talk about the racism they have faced from their peers and their feelings and responses.
