Now We Are Older...
Now We Are Older...
Synopsis
A series of interviews with the elderly residents of Brunswick in Hove about their quality of life and how it could be improved, filmed by Su Braden as part of Brunswick Community Association Video Group in 1985. The video consists of various talking-head interviews between older pensioners and young interviewees. Their stories often come to the same conclusion – pensioners need greater financial support from the government with social security, more dedicated healthcare as they often live alone, or with caretakers and family members who are equally in their 70s or 80s. The film highlights how these older people would prefer to find a way to live alone with social support rather than be moved to group homes. The film is equally critical of the private rental system which benefits landlords rather than providing security for pensioners, and we see a case where a woman’s ceiling collapsed on her pillow.
