Independent video production and the international phenomenon of youth movements fueled each other in the 1970s and 1980s: Young activists discovered video as a new medium, expressed their protest moods, and fought for autonomous cultural spaces. Video productions emerged participatively, directly, and quickly; they marked an important step into the digital age.

Rebel Video portrays protagonists of this activist scene in London, Basel, Bern, Lausanne, and Zurich. The book documents the themes addressed by these creative "rioters" and the impact their work has on contemporary life. Complemented by in-depth contributions from educators and researchers in the fields of documentary film and video art, the book illuminates the vibrant richness of the alternative video movement's meaning.

The book is published on the occasion of the exhibition "Rebel Video: The Video Movement of the 1970s and 1980s" at the Swiss National Museum in Zurich and is complemented by the website rebelvideo.ch.
