Made in 1984, Making News was produced by Terry Flaxton, Penny Dedman and Jeanette Mitchell, the collective behind Vida and Triple Vision. The film is a direct affront against the media that sensationalises and distorts facts when reporting about strikes and trade-union activities to the general public. According to Flaxton, “Making News was originally commissioned by the Campaign for Press and Broadcasting Freedom to expose unsound journalistic practices.” The video examines how three broadcast news channels reported on the 1982 healthcare workers’ strikes. The documentary exposes how interviews with healthcare workers are distorted in the editing room to consistently portray the strikes as negligent and life-threatening to patients. The news fails to critique the Thatcherite government’s cuts to the NHS. Flaxton adds, “So successful was the work that on completion, both the NUJ and ACTT threatened the makers with having their membership of these organisations being taken away if cuts were not made (by vested interests within the organisations). Naturally Vida/Triple Vision ignored the warnings and went ahead in releasing the tape uncut.”
