Pout Issue Two
Pout Issue Two
Pout: Issue Two is the second edition of a community-produced colour video magazine exploring lesbian and gay life in Britain during the early 1990s. Created by a collective of artists and activists associated with Outrage, the tape brings together interviews, performances, satire, and documentary fragments in a lively collage of queer experience and media intervention.
The issue is hosted by a puppet who discusses the experience of being outed, framing a series of playful and politically charged segments. Highlights include: a comic vignette featuring three queers in cream face masks, dressing gowns and towels gossiping about nights out while flipping through magazines; a visit to Belt Up and Buckle Up showcasing lesbian sex toys and BDSM gear; and interviews with gay men about their goatees, with the camera zooming closely on facial hair as a motif of self-styling and desire. Other segments feature footage from Gay Pride 1990 and an OutRage! Age of Consent demonstration, alongside a humorous interview with drag artist Lanah Pillay, contributions from volunteers at the Food Chain, and a parody of Channel 4’s Star Test series. The tape also includes Steven Bourne’s review of 1950s musicals and commentary on Marnie Nixon, a country dyke gig, “Annie’s Problem Bits” agony aunt section, a spoof advert for the “Orosimulator” sex toy, and a “Queer Family Album” sequence.
