Disability

This collection focuses on how disabled people have challenged stereotypes, exposed barriers, and pushed for social and political change. While state policy under Thatcher called for greater “community support,” these works reveal how that same government was actively stripping back the very community infrastructure disabled people relied on. Projects in the collection examine both material issues, such as lack of access and cuts to services like the GLC-funded Greenwich Dial-a-Ride, and broader questions of representation, power, and agency. Rejecting the medical model of disability, many of these videos present disability as a consequence of social organisation rather than individual limitation. The collection includes workshops, theatre-based education, and critical reflections on race, gender, and disability. Topics include: access; independence; the politics of care; media representation; peer-led education; and the social construction of disability. Featured titles include So Clear in My Mind, Disabling Council, and Beyond our Ken.
