Project Director

2 days per week for the duration of the project, plus 15 days for event support

August 2026-April 2029 (Fixed Term Contract)

Purpose of the Role

The Project Director will provide both strategic leadership and practical delivery for the BFI-funded project LCVA: Building an Independent and Sustainable Future. Working closely with the Directors, Project Coordinator, partners and collaborators, they will lead organisational development, oversee programme delivery and support the day-to-day management of the project.

This is a hands-on role requiring a combination of strategic thinking, project management, partnership building and operational oversight. The successful candidate will help shape the future sustainability of the London Community Video Archive while ensuring the effective delivery of an ambitious programme of activity.

As a small organisation, LCVA works collaboratively and flexibly. The Project Director will combine strategic leadership with practical delivery, administration and coordination, working across all aspects of the project as required in line with regular management and support from CIC director. We are looking for someone with experience delivering community engagement programmes and cultural events, someone who knows and cares what the LCVA is and does.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership and Organisational Development

  • Lead the strategic direction and delivery of the programme, ensuring activities contribute to a coherent vision for the future of LCVA.

  • Guide and manage the project LCVA: Building an Independent and Sustainable Future, sharing expertise and insights with the project team, volunteers and wider audiences.

  • Research and develop recommendations for a sustainable organisational structure, governance model and long-term business plan.

  • Lead implementation of organisational development priorities, including collections policy, mission and values, management structures and income-generation initiatives.

  • Manage key strategic relationships with funders, partners, advisors and stakeholders.

Programme Delivery and Partnerships

Oversee and actively contribute to the delivery of all project activity alongside the Project Manager including:

  • Develop and deliver the pilot Friends Scheme.

  • Develop and deliver two national events for grassroots moving image archives.

  • Develop and oversee the Curatorial Fellowship programme, including support and management of Fellows and partner relationships.

  • Provide creative oversight across the programme, identifying opportunities for collaboration between archives, communities, artists and heritage organisations.

  • Share project learning, findings and good practice with the wider archive, heritage and cultural sectors.

Operations, Finance and Governance

  • Coordinate meetings, governance processes and reporting with Directors, partners, consultants and evaluators.

  • Maintain oversight of project budgets, expenditure, cashflow forecasting and financial reporting, working with the organisation’s accountant and bookkeeper.

  • Manage the BFI funding agreement and ensure high-quality reporting, evaluation and audience data submission.

  • Oversee website redevelopment and digital infrastructure improvements.

  • Ensure organisational policies, procedures, contracts, licences, insurance and compliance requirements are maintained.

  • Oversee environmental sustainability, IT, health and safety, security and other statutory responsibilities.

People Management and Culture

  • Lead recruitment, HR processes and organisational development activity.

  • Line manage and support Project Co-ordinator and Curatorial Fellows and provide management support across the project team.

  • Collaborate with the Archive Consultant, Clip-Sales Consultant and Evaluator

  • Foster an inclusive, collaborative and accountable organisational culture that enables staff, volunteers, Fellows and partners to thrive.

  • Promote equity, diversity and inclusion across all aspects of the project.

Person Specification

Essential

  • Degree-level qualification or equivalent professional experience in small arts, heritage, archives

  • Significant leadership experience within the arts, heritage, charity or cultural sectors.

  • Knowledge of socially engaged arts practice and community-led curation.

  • Experience leading complex projects and organisational development programmes.

  • Experience reporting to national funders and managing externally funded projects.

  • Experience overseeing budgets, financial planning and risk management.

  • Experience working with archives, heritage collections, community media or related cultural practice.

  • Experience building partnerships with community organisations, cultural institutions and sector networks.

  • Strong governance, HR and organisational management experience.

  • Excellent communication, stakeholder management and relationship-building skills.

  • Experience delivering ambitious projects with small teams and limited resources.

  • Commitment to equality, diversity, inclusion and community-led practice.

  • Experience working remotely

Desirable

  • Experience of BFI-funded projects.

  • Knowledge of moving image archives and community video practice.

  • Experience developing fellowship, talent-development or learning programmes.

  • Experience in audience development, marketing and sector advocacy.

  • Experience delivering community engagement programmes and cultural events.
