LGBTQ
This collection of films captures the resilience and creative expression of LGBTQ+ communities during a time of rising queerphobia and political repression. Spanning a period marked by the Thatcher government’s regressive policies, heightened media hostility, and escalating street violence—these works serve as powerful documents of both protest and possibility.
Through bold documentary and activist filmmaking, the featured titles confront urgent issues including media bias, queer bashing, institutionalised homophobia, and police harassment. They also offer nuanced explorations of the intersections between sexuality, race, and class, while championing the radical politics of queer liberation, socialist thought, and grassroots performance art.
The collection foregrounds the work of pioneering community and arts collectives such as Gay Sweatshop, Greenwich Lesbian & Gay Rights Group, and the Lesbian and Gay Youth Video Project—organisations that used film as a weapon of both resistance and representation.
Featured titles include: Framed Youth - Revenge of the Teenage Perverts (1983) and Watch out- There's a Queer About (1980).
