Allan Sutherland
Allan Sutherland reserached and wrote The Disabling Council and, with co-writer Stuart Morris, went on to create ‘Inmates’, the first sitcom piloted by the BBC with a cast of disabled actors, and to write for EastEnders.
Allan has been a key figure in the development of Disability Arts.
Allan has developed the process of transcription poetry, where he conducts an oral history interview, and then edits it into poetry, a remarkably powerful way of recording the voices of disabled people.
This forms part of the working methods of ‘Electric Bodies’, a research project into disability arts led by Allan Sutherland and Colin Hambrook. Initial outcomes include cycles of poems from the words of actor Mat Fraser and artist Tony Heaton.
