Sonic Visions: Rewind. Step Forward, Atlas Cinema x Buzwakk Records x Spanners

May 11th, 2025

Screening & Open Decks Street Listening Session
11 May | 3PM-8PM | Atlas Cinema & Buzwakk Records

Presented by the London Community Video Archive (LCVA) in collaboration with Atlas Cinema, Buzwakk Records and Spanners, Sonic Visions is a public programme exploring Black music history, cultural memory, and resistance through sound, video, and archive–activated across these vital local spaces under the railway arches, mapping the area’s historical and musical topography through contributions from local figures.

The programme includes a screening of Step Forward (1988), a rare, recently acquired, community video from late 1980s South London which documents the city’s Black music scene during that period, with a focus on reggae music and sound system culture. The screening will be introduced by sociologist Paul Gilroy who features in the film.

A post-film conversation will follow, to hear stories of local DIY networks.

Following the screening, we’ll move a few arches down to Buzwakk Records for a street listening session, reactivating the archive through a community-led musical showcase of vinyls played on a street sound system.
