Synopsis

The colour video focuses on an activist in drag as Margaret Thatcher with a sign that reads ‘John Major MP, Prime Minister, House of Commons’ during one of the Equality Now protests in 1992. In this video, Drag Thatcher is flanked by policemen. The activist raises their placard, donned in large, ornamental earrings and a polka-dot suit.

Launched by non-violent direct-action group OutRage! in 1992, the campaign aimed to challenge anti-LGBTQ+ discrimination in Britain. Over six months of the Equality Now campaign, thousands of activists took part in protests, blockades, and civil disobedience, resulting in scores of arrests and massive media attention.
